About 15 kilometers from the Landhotel and very easy to reach by bus or bike (about 20 km \/ 1 hour) is the Oder city Schwedt. The national park town, named only a few years ago, is distinguished not only by its picturesque location on the river, but also by its variety of sights and recreational opportunities. The town was founded in the 17th century by Huguenot religious refugees who found a new home here. Even today, numerous buildings and street names remind us of this eventful time.<\/p>\n

Schwedt was once the residence of the Margraves of Brandenburg-Schwedt, a branch of the Hohenzollern dynasty. Laid out on the Dutch model, it was given a grid-like street network and baroque buildings.<\/p>\n

Today, there are numerous restored half-timbered houses and historic buildings that give an insight into the eventful history of the town. Unfortunately, the Second World War severely damaged the town complex, leaving only a few historic buildings. Instead of the former margrave’s castle, the Uckerm\u00e4rkische B\u00fchnen Schwedt are located today.<\/p>\n

With a diverse program of theater, entertainment and music and over 100,000 spectators per year, they are considered a cultural beacon of Brandenburg. The Oder Valley Festival, organized annually by the Uckerm\u00e4rkische B\u00fchnen in a romantic natural setting directly on the banks of the Old Oder River, is one of the cultural highlights every summer.<\/p>\n

Start your exploration best in the historic old town. Also worth seeing are Schwedt Castle and the town church of St. Mary. Those interested in art and culture should visit the Uckermark Museum. Another highlight of the city is the loading bulwark along the Hohensaaten-Friedrichsthal waterway, which has existed since the early 17th century. At the former industrial harbor near the city bridge, a newly designed waterfront promenade has been created, so that you can walk, cycle or simply enjoy the view of the water along the old Oder River. A part of the Oder-Neisse long-distance bicycle trail also runs along the new riverbank zone. Especially impressive are the sunsets that you can experience from here.<\/p>\n

At the beginning of the 1960s, Schwedt began to develop into an industrial city. Within a short time, large residential complexes and factories were built. Today, about 32,000 people live in the Oder city and its districts. With the PCK refinery and two large paper mills, it is now one of the largest industrial centers in Brandenburg.<\/p>\n
